I’ve decided to design a universal health insurance app.

About the project.  Everything starts with an idea. I realized that the healthcare system in Washington State could be improved, so I created a universal health insurance app. Navigating health and insurance plans can overwhelm everyday users, especially when critical information is buried behind jargon and dense flows. Insurely was designed to simplify the insurance experience by providing users with personalized plan recommendations, visual clarity, and quick access to key information. Through thoughtful design and clear onboarding, my goal was to reduce cognitive load, streamline decision-making, and build trust.

My Role:

Product Designer

Duration:

4 months

Challenge:

Users struggle to understand their insurance coverage, navigate confusing portals, and connect with providers quickly.

Goal:

Design a seamless, user-friendly experience that empowers users to understand, manage, and maximize their health insurance coverage in one place.

Tools:

Figma, Maze, Notion, Google Forms

Responsibilities:

- Defined product goals based on common insurance frustrations

- Designed user flows and wireframes for onboarding and plan comparison

- Developed a modern, accessible UI system with a strong visual hierarchy

- Created iconography to support ease of use

- Prototyped and iterated on flows based on user feedback and insights

"Insurance platforms often feel cold and complex. I wanted to create something human, warm, and intuitive—especially for people who need clarity the most."

What is the main problem, and why is this a problem? So, the main issue is that most health insurance companies and medical centers cannot provide comfortable usability to their users; they have mobile applications only for their customers or don't have mobile apps at all. This is a problem because 53.6% of users struggle with insurance complexity, and the current system creates fragmentation, inefficiency, and user care barriers. The lack of a unified and user-friendly system leads to:
1. Confusion & Frustration – Users struggle to navigate multiple platforms, making it harder to understand coverage, find providers, and manage appointments.
2. Time-Consuming Processes— Scheduling care requires searching across different apps, calling providers, and manually verifying insurance, which often takes hours.
3. Delayed or Missed Care – Users may postpone necessary appointments due to difficulty accessing information, leading to worsened health outcomes.
4. Unexpected Costs – Patients risk surprise medical bills and out-of-network charges without clear, real-time cost transparency.
So, a universal app solves these issues by centralizing information, improving accessibility, and streamlining healthcare management.

Personal Outcome & Reflection

Working on Insurely challenged me to think beyond clean UI and dive deep into solving real problems in the healthcare space. This project taught me the following:

  • How to design for complexity: I learned how to translate complicated insurance jargon into simple, human language through careful UX writing and hierarchy.
  • The power of testing early: Running informal usability tests and A/B comparisons showed me how small design decisions—like copy placement or button contrast—can significantly impact comprehension and action.
  • Balancing visual design with accessibility: I sharpened my ability to maintain a bold, modern visual system while ensuring WCAG compliance, proper color contrast, and inclusive touch targets.
  • Designing at scale: By building reusable components and a modular layout system, I gained confidence in planning for both mobile and tablet formats without breaking consistency.
  • User empathy: Most importantly, I learned how much anxiety and confusion people face when managing their insurance. That drove me to design with clarity, trust, and support as top priorities.

This project gave me a deeper appreciation for how product design can solve functional problems, reduce stress, and empower users to take control of their health.
